How to Save on Monthly Electricity Costs for Boarding School Children!
For friends who live in a boarding house, it is very important to calculate expenses in detail so that you can adjust the contents of your wallet, such as money for food, transportation, toiletries and no less important is paying electricity bills.
Therefore, it is important to learn how to calculate electricity costs so you can save money and know what objects use up a lot of electricity.
1. Check the electricity tariff group first.
Data on electricity tariffs as of October 2025 from the information we obtained includes:
- Power 450 VA Subsidized Rp. 415/kWh.
- Power 900 VA Subsidized Rp. 605/kWh.
- Power 900 VA RTM Rp. 1,352/kWh.
- Power 1,300 – 2,200 VA Rp. 1,444.70/kWh.
- Power 3,500+ Rp. 1,699.53/kWh.
2. Take note of equipment that requires electricity.
Digitalkit makes a list of examples of equipment along with electrical power so that friends can learn to calculate equipment usage based on these examples, which are generally standard for boarding house children.
- 1 25 watt lamp.
- 1 80 watt mini refrigerator.
- 1 Miyako 395 watt Rice Cooker.
3. Make Estimates of Your Usage.
The following is an estimate of electricity usage within 24 hours which we feel will not be much different from your usual usage.
- 1 25 watt lamp, average use is 12 hours/day so 25 watts X 12 hours = 300 watts.
- 1 80 watt refrigerator, average use is 24 hours so 80 watts X 24 hours = 1,920 watts.
- 1 Rice Cooker 395 watts, average use is 2 hours/day so 395 watts X 2 hours = 790 watts.
4. Lastly, Calculate Electricity Payment Costs!
If we add up the total electricity usage in a 24 hour period, your usage is 3,010 watts from the use of lights, refrigerators and rice cokers.
To find out how much you have to pay to PLN, the formula is: convert watts to kWh (divide by 1,000) then multiply by the electricity cost based on your boarding house’s electricity tariff group.
Problem Solving
Electricity usage of 3,010 watts/day is converted into kWh units, so 3,010 : 1,000 = 3.01 kWh. Then multiply by your type of electricity category (example: 900 VA Subsidized Tariff Rp. 605/kWh). So 3.01 kwh X Rp. 605 = Rp. 1,821.05/day and if you add it up in a month your electricity bill will cost Rp. 54,631.5.
For boarding house children and whoever you are, the amount of electricity you pay depends on the type of electricity category, how much equipment and how long you use the equipment in a 24-hour day.
You can apply the following ways to save monthly electricity costs for boarding school children from us:
- Use the lowest wattage lamp and turn it on at least for approximately 5-6 hours a day and night, starting from 18:00 – 22:00 and 05:00 – 06:00 in the morning.
- For students, we recommend that you don’t have to have a refrigerator in your boarding room, or we recommend choosing and setting the lowest temperature to save electricity.
- Lastly, don’t turn on the fan if you want to sleep because it will definitely run until morning.
Conclusion
The calculation of usage costs above is specifically for the type of postpaid electricity or in other words you will be billed by PLN for the total electricity usage for 1 month. Then, for prepaid electricity it is actually the same but there are a few additional costs (taxes) that you need to know about. That’s it for this article and I hope it’s useful.
