This is the Impact of the Amazon Forest Fires for the World

The Amazon forest fires are quite catastrophic. According to records from Brazilian Satellites data, it is stated that the damaged land is equivalent to three football fields the size of a minute.

If the size of the football is described, it can reach 120 meters in length and up to 90 meters in width.

As Dafunda Tekno quoted Business Insider in July, the forest has lost 519 square miles (1,345 sq km) of trees. This is a new record for the largest deforestation ever in the Amazon in a single month.

The National Institute for Space Research (INPE) revealed an 80 percent increase in forest fires in the Amazon, where there have been 72,843 incidents this year.

The Effects of the Amazon Forest Fires on the World

According to ecologist Thomas Lovejoy, he believes that the deforestation of the Amazon is caused by fires. This happened after Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro approved permits for untouched forest areas to be used for mining, agriculture and logging.

One of the senior scientists from INPE, Carlos Nobre also revealed what has happened in the Amazon is very risky. The reason is, the world will lose most of the ‘lungs of the Earth’.

The Amazon, which is referred to as the lungs of the world according to the World Widlife Fund (WWF), covers an area of 2.6 square miles (6.7 million square km). Through the process of photosynthesis the Amazon has converted 20 percent of Earth’s oxygen so that it can store 80-140 billion metric tons of carbon.

WWF also emphasized that deforestation and land conversion of 0.5 billion metric tons of carbon released into the atmosphere could accelerate global warming significantly.

“The effects of the destruction of the Amazon forest are not only experienced in the Amazon region, but will affect all of us,” said Robin Chazdon of the University of Connecticut.
