The name for this Sky Toll is where it shows the Palapa Ring, which is an internet infrastructure in which there is an optical cable, microwave and 4G BTS towers. All that has been prepared by the government to boost the digital industry.

The priority is to create equal access to telecommunications and information. Especially for the outermost, leading, and underdeveloped (3T) regions as well as creating more internet-based business opportunities.

Ever Considered Just A Dream

The Palapa Ring was once threatened that it was just a dream. The reason is that this development has been stalled for almost a decade since it was planned since 2007.

In 2022 the government continued its efforts to realize the Palapa Ring project. The Minister of Communication and Information, Rudiantara, began to tender for the Palapa Ring project which was divided into three packages. These are the West Palapa Ring, the Middle Palapa Ring, and the East Palapa Ring.

The West Palapa Ring is the area of ​​Riau and the Riau Islands (to Natuna), the Central Palapa Ring is the area of ​​Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and North Maluku (to the Sangihe-Talaud islands).

Meanwhile the East Palapa Ring is the area of ​​NTT, Maluku, West Papua and Papua. This project has been running since 2022 and construction was completed in 2022.

Areas that Support the Palapa Ring Sky Toll Road

The Palapa Ring is expected to be the foundation for the national telecommunications system by building 36,000 kilometers of optical fiber from west to east of Indonesia.

This project covers the areas of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Nusa Tenggara, Papua Sulawesi, to Maluku and one backhaul to connect all.

It is hoped that with this cable and optics, it can reach 440 districts/cities in 34 provinces in Indonesia. As quoted from the official Kominfo website, the Palapa Ring will be integrated with the existing network (existing network) with the new network (new network) in eastern Indonesia (East Palapa Ring).

For the East Palapa Ring area, a distance of 4,450 km will be made which includes starting sub marine cable as far as 3850 km and land cable along 600 km with landing point at point 15 which is in 21/kabupaten.
